A Look At Replacing Your Rusted Out Hot Water Heater With A New One

Herbert Chambers

If the bottom of your hot water heater is rusted out and leaking, you won't have any choice but to have a new heater installed. A tank that is rusted all the way through is beyond repair. If you choose the same type of heater and have it installed in the same place, a plumber can have the job done in just a few hours. Here's an overview of the water heater installation process.

The Old Tank Is Disconnected And Removed

If the old tank still has water in it, all the water has to be drained out, before the tank is removed. The tank also has to be disconnected from the power supply and plumbing pipes. When all that's done, the tank can be lifted out of place to make room for the new tank. However, before you have the new water heater installed, think about any changes you want to make. Now is an ideal time to switch to a tankless heater, switch to gas from electric, or move the location of the heater.

Any of these changes require extra expense and time. If you're getting a new heater just like the old one, then the power and pipes can be left in place and the new heater is much easier to install. Once the old heater is removed, your plumber will probably dispose of it, but this is one thing you'll want to ask upfront, so you can make arrangements to get rid of the tank, if you need to.

The New Tank Is Installed And Filled

Installing the new tank requires placing it in the proper position and connecting it to the power source and plumbing pipes. A careful check of the pressure relief valve and drain valve are done, to make sure the tank isn't leaking and that is is safe to operate. This is a good time to ask the plumber how to check the pressure relief valve so you can test it regularly. Also, ask about any maintenance tasks you need to do, to prolong the life of your new hot water heater. When the tank is filled, time is allowed for the water to heat up and your new tank is tested. A new hot water tank should operate more efficiently than your old one, and it should last for many years when properly maintained.

The water tank installation process isn't too difficult, but it's necessary to do the job right, which is one reason local codes may require a plumber to do the job and to have an inspection afterward. However, when you switch to a tankless heater, the work is more involved and may require putting in a new electrical circuit or upgrading your electrical panel.

Discuss your options in a new water tank, before making your decision on which one to buy, so you're happy with your purchase and you have enough hot water to meet all of your demands.

Hidden Plumbing Problems: What To Look For

When I decided to replace the plumbing fixtures in my house with new ones, the whole process revealed some heavily damaged pipes. I had missed all of the more subtle signs of issues, and only realized it when I had to work on the pipes to get the new fixtures installed. I created this site to help others understand what to watch for and what types of things to look at before they start working. Spotting problems ahead of time will make it easier to get the project done in one sitting. I hope that the information here helps others avoid the emergency situation and unexpected expenses that I found myself facing.
