Avoid Clogs In Your Business's Public Restroom

Herbert Chambers

As a business owner, you want to make your place of business welcoming to customers or clients. This means offering some basic amenities, such as a public restroom. Of course, this also means making sure the restroom is well maintained and functional at all times. The following tips can help you avoid plumbing mishaps in your public restroom.

Tip #1: Have the drains inspected

The pipes can be a problem in commercial buildings, particularly in older buildings where they can be old, worn, or not up to current codes. One common issue is that older main drain lines aren't of sufficient width to handle the waste water from modern water systems or heavy use. Water pressure and flow amounts have increased over the years, so the old narrow pipes are simply too small to allow for good drainage. Add in issues like the flushing of too much toilet paper or feminine hygiene products, and you may have ongoing issues with clogs. Having the pipes inspected and cleaned can help but, if you have the old narrow drainpipe, you may want to have it upgraded to a new, wider pipe.

Tip #2: Choose automatic appliances

Over-filling a toilet bowl is a sure way to get a clog. Add to this fact the odd habits of some people in a public restroom, and you can end up with bowls overflowing with waste, toilet paper, or even paper towels. Then, when someone does try to flush, the bowl overflows. Opt for an automatic unit and many of these issues are solved since the bowl will flush as soon as the sensor picks up movement. Automatic faucets are also a good idea. This way no one can plug a sink and leave the tap running, which can cause flooding. Your customers will also appreciate not having to touch dirty handles.

Tip #3: Manage paper products

Paper, both toilet paper and hand towels, are a common cause of a clogged toilet. While you can't limit TP usage, you can manage problems. Opt for dispensers that automatically tear after a full turn to cut down on the temptation to pull off yards of paper. Also, use the thinner commercial TP that is designed to break down quickly. Finally, opt for hand dryers instead of providing paper towels.

Of course, you should also integrate regular maintenance into your plan. This means having an employee check on and clean the restrooms periodically throughout the day. You should also schedule annual commercial plumbing inspections so you can spot and repair problems before they get out of hand. About Me
Hidden Plumbing Problems: What To Look For

When I decided to replace the plumbing fixtures in my house with new ones, the whole process revealed some heavily damaged pipes. I had missed all of the more subtle signs of issues, and only realized it when I had to work on the pipes to get the new fixtures installed. I created this site to help others understand what to watch for and what types of things to look at before they start working. Spotting problems ahead of time will make it easier to get the project done in one sitting. I hope that the information here helps others avoid the emergency situation and unexpected expenses that I found myself facing.
