Six Plumbing Malfunctions That Are More Likely When Temperatures Rise

Herbert Chambers

Temperatures have been rising in many areas of the country. While many of us enjoy basking in the sun during the hot summer months, it's important to realize that rising temperatures and summertime activities can sometimes be hard on our plumbing systems. There are certain plumbing malfunctions that can become more likely in some households during the summer.

The following are six plumbing malfunctions that are often more likely when temperatures rise outside. Homeowners should be conscious of these potential malfunctions and do what they can to avoid them and prevent unpleasant summertime plumbing hassles.

Backed up sewer lines

Sewer line backups can become common in summer in some parts of the United States because of the thunderstorms and heavy rain showers brought on by very humid weather conditions.

Sudden heavy rain can seep into sewer pipes and cause backups. Sewer line backups can also become more likely in the summer because trees generally experience heavy periods of growth in the summer and growing tree roots are a common cause of sewer pipe damage and backups.

Clogged toilets

A lot of times, more demands are placed on toilets in the summer months because large get-togethers and parties take place where more people than usual are relying on plumbing fixtures.

It's important to avoid overuse of toilets and to make sure that guests aren't flushing items down the toilet that are likely to cause clogs, like paper towels or dental floss. This will help to prevent summertime toilet clogs.

Clogged garbage disposals

Garbage disposals often also see heavier use in the summertime. Summertime parties inevitably involve cookouts and the production of lots of food. Foods that are popular in the summertime like corn and watermelon can be hard on garbage disposals if they aren't disposed of properly.

It's important to do some research on how garbage disposals are to be used and what types of food shouldn't be put down disposals to prevent clogs and disposal damage.

Flooding in basements

Another issue sometimes brought on by heavy summertime rainfall is flooded basements. One of the best things a homeowner can do to prevent damage from basement floods is make sure that their sump pump is operating effectively.

Washing machine malfunctions

The summertime can put a lot of stress on washing machines because clothing tends to get dirtier when it is used during outdoor sporting events and activities popular during the summer.

It's best to try to cut down on load size when you're washing heavily soiled clothing to keep your washing machine in the best possible shape.

Clogged shower drains

Shower drain clogs in the summer are sometimes common. This is especially true for those showering at home after spending time at the beach because sand that gets down shower drains can create clogs.

It's important to avoid allowing any substances like sand and pebbles that can cause clogs to get down drains.

Hidden Plumbing Problems: What To Look For

When I decided to replace the plumbing fixtures in my house with new ones, the whole process revealed some heavily damaged pipes. I had missed all of the more subtle signs of issues, and only realized it when I had to work on the pipes to get the new fixtures installed. I created this site to help others understand what to watch for and what types of things to look at before they start working. Spotting problems ahead of time will make it easier to get the project done in one sitting. I hope that the information here helps others avoid the emergency situation and unexpected expenses that I found myself facing.
