How To Avoid Clogging The Wash Sink In Your Laundry Room

Herbert Chambers

These days, a wash sink is a common fixture in a modern laundry room. These sinks are in place to allow you to wash out dirty spots on your laundry before they ever go into the washing machine. Having this sink right next to your washer makes it easier to eliminate buildup and gunk so all that stuff does not end up in the washer during the wash cycle or stuck in the drain. Unfortunately, this laundry room wash sink can be prone to clogs specifically because of all the gunk that tends to go down the drain. Here is a look at a few things you can do to prevent clogs in the drain of this handy sink.

Make sure you have a screen in place over your drain.

Those cheap little drain savers you can pick up at just about any dollar store are truly your best friend when it comes to avoiding clogs. These screens trap all those bits of stuff that have no business being in the drain line because they will eventually create a massive clog. Get yourself a good one that will suction to the base of the sink over the drain and not slip around, and empty the screen frequently into the trash. This one thing can save you so much hassle later on.

Rinse your sink out with super hot water after every use.

Once you have got that grimy residue off of the football uniform, the gunk off of your sweater from yesterday's Chinese food, and everything else, make sure you do a quick rinse with only hot water afterward. This quick flush with hot water will help melt down any sticky bits that may be hanging out in the drain so you don't end up with a compilation of grit and grime that creates a clog.

Avoid pouring soaps and softeners down the drain undiluted.

The sink is next to the washing machine and is handy, so when you need to empty extra fabric softener or laundry detergent out of a bottle, you may be tempted to pour it down the drain. This is never a good idea. When these solutions are not diluted, they are easily an agent that could clog up a drain, especially if the drain is not free-flowing already. If you must dump out some extra detergent or fabric softener, fill the sink with a fair amount of hot water first to dilute it.

Hidden Plumbing Problems: What To Look For

When I decided to replace the plumbing fixtures in my house with new ones, the whole process revealed some heavily damaged pipes. I had missed all of the more subtle signs of issues, and only realized it when I had to work on the pipes to get the new fixtures installed. I created this site to help others understand what to watch for and what types of things to look at before they start working. Spotting problems ahead of time will make it easier to get the project done in one sitting. I hope that the information here helps others avoid the emergency situation and unexpected expenses that I found myself facing.
