Three Signs You Have Issues With Draining And What You Can Do About It

Herbert Chambers

The sewer system around your home is very important. Wastewater and waste run from your drain pipes into the sewer and are taken to the wastewater treatment plant, or if you have a septic tank, they're taken to your very own septic system. If you have issues, no matter what type of system you have, it's important to have them repaired immediately as they can cause you a number of other problems, and they can become costly. Read on for a few signs to watch out for that would indicate an issue with draining and what you can do about it.

1. Odd Noises

Noises coming from the drains in your home could indicate a problem with your drainage system. If you can hear gurgling noises after you've flushed the toilet, you may have a clog. If you hear gurgling in the toilet when you're running the washing machine, it could indicate a problem with your main sewer line. Gurgling noises or loud draining noises should not be ignored. If you hear anything at all that doesn't seem normal to you, you should have your plumbing looked at by a professional plumber. If you think you can handle the clog yourself, you can try to use a liquid drain clearing solution in your drains to see if this helps. If the clog is in your toilet, try to use a toilet plunger to see if it does the job.

2. Slow Drain Flow

If the drains in your home are draining slowly, the issue may be due to a clog in your drainage system. Slow draining can be due to all types of reasons, including a clog outside of your home in the main sewer line. Tall trees and their roots may be the issue. If you have tree roots growing through your sewer line outside in your yard, they could cause a problem with all of the drains in your home. If you are seeing this type of issue, you should hire a professional plumber to inspect your sewer line and clean it out as needed. This type of job would require the use of a long snake to clean out the sewer line.

3. Water/Waste Backing Up

If you have waste or water coming back up through your drains, it can be messy and also dangerous for your health. If you have this type of issue, you should contact a professional plumber right away to have your drains and your sewer lines inspected. You could have an issue with a clog or a collapsed sewer line. Either way, you should hire a professional to take a look at your system.

These are just a few issues that would indicate a problem with your drains or sewer line. If you have any issues with the plumbing around your home and you aren't sure how to make the repair yourself, call a plumber for help.

Hidden Plumbing Problems: What To Look For

When I decided to replace the plumbing fixtures in my house with new ones, the whole process revealed some heavily damaged pipes. I had missed all of the more subtle signs of issues, and only realized it when I had to work on the pipes to get the new fixtures installed. I created this site to help others understand what to watch for and what types of things to look at before they start working. Spotting problems ahead of time will make it easier to get the project done in one sitting. I hope that the information here helps others avoid the emergency situation and unexpected expenses that I found myself facing.
