Some Signs That Your Garbage Disposal Needs a Plumbing Professional

Herbert Chambers

Even if you are a pro at fixing dripping faucets and clogged toilets, there are some situations where it is wise to hire a professional for your plumbing problem. This is true if you are having some issues with your garbage disposal. Keep reading to learn about some signs of a problem and what your plumber may do to fix it.

1. Leaking From the Unit

If you see water dripping from the underside of the garbage disposal or if you see a great deal of water pooling under your sink, then there is a good chance that your garbage disposal is leaking. Some other signs include the formation of condensation on the outside of the unit and the development of rust on the metal portions of the device.

Sometimes, a garbage disposal may only require a seal replacement. There are a few seals within the system. The main one is located between the hopper and the grinder. There are also smaller ones around the drain opening and the intake for the dishwasher. Some gaskets can be found between the disposal outlets and the plumbing fixtures too.

Your plumber can check all seals within the device and along all pipe fittings to see if they need to be replaced. Oftentimes, the seals are simply rubber O-rings that your plumber can exchange.

Keep in mind that if the unit has developed a hole within the device, then this means that water may be dripping into the motor. This is a serious issue that will require a replacement unit. Your plumber can install one for you.

2. Noisy Unit

If your garbage disposal is making a grinding noise, then this is a bad sign. However, it may simply mean that a large seed, a piece of plastic, or a stray metal instrument has gotten stuck in the grinder. You can get the piece out by using a small wrench to remove the underside of the unit. This allows for open access to the grinder and easy debris removal. If you are uncomfortable doing this, a plumber can do it for you and they can also make sure that the flywheel and the grinding teeth are in good shape. These pieces can often be replaced individually if they are in poor condition.

Sometimes, the noise is attributed to a flywheel that is no longer operational, so this will give the plumber an opportunity to replace this part if there is a need. Noises also can mean motor problems and the possible need for a replacement.

About Me
Hidden Plumbing Problems: What To Look For

When I decided to replace the plumbing fixtures in my house with new ones, the whole process revealed some heavily damaged pipes. I had missed all of the more subtle signs of issues, and only realized it when I had to work on the pipes to get the new fixtures installed. I created this site to help others understand what to watch for and what types of things to look at before they start working. Spotting problems ahead of time will make it easier to get the project done in one sitting. I hope that the information here helps others avoid the emergency situation and unexpected expenses that I found myself facing.
