Since most of your home's plumbing system is hidden behind walls and under your foundation (or in your basement), you probably don't give it much thought when things are running smoothly. Unfortunately, plumbing problems can occur at any time — and if left unaddressed, they can wreak a lot of havoc and cost you a lot of money.

By being on the lookout for some common plumbing "red flags," you'll know when it's time to call a plumber.

A Slow-Draining Shower or Tub

If you're noticing that your tub or shower is taking a long time to drain, this could be indicative of a clog somewhere inside the drain. Oftentimes, hair is the culprit, but a professional plumber will be able to pinpoint the exact location/cause of the clog and have it cleared in no time.

A Randomly-Running Toilet

Have you ever noticed that it sounds like your toilet is running, even when it's not in use? This can happen when there is a bad fill valve inside the toilet itself. Over time, toilet fill valves can become worn out and need to be replaced. Otherwise, a frequently-running toilet will waste water and cost you money on your utility bill. A professional plumber will be able to replace your fill valve quickly to resolve the problem.

Damp or Discolored Drywall

Since many of your plumbing pipes are located behind your home's drywall, damp or discolored drywall may be the first sign of a leaky pipe. If you notice that a spot of the drywall on your walls or ceiling is damp to the touch or appears to be darker than the surrounding material, this is probably indicative of a plumbing leak. Try shutting off water to mitigate the damage and call an emergency plumber to perform the necessary repair.

Suddenly Low Water Pressure

If your water pressure has suddenly dropped, start by determining whether the problem is localized or affecting your entire home. If the issue is localized, you may have a clog or something else impeding the flow of water to that particular plumbing appliance. If the issue is house-wide, then a new pressure regulator may need to be installed. Either way, you'll want to call a plumber.

Running into plumbing problems can be a hassle, but the good news is that, with help from an experienced and reputable plumber, you can have the issue resolved in no time and for little cost.
