What To Do When Your Well Pump Stops Pumping Water

Herbert Chambers

Homes that use well water may have one of several different well pump systems, but a failure of the pump in any case can be challenging to deal with. Working with a well repair company is often the best option, but there are some things you can check to ensure that you need well repair.

Check the Power

One of the first things you need to check if your well pump stops working is the power to the pump. Locate the circuit breaker in your home's electrical panel and make sure that it has not tripped off and prevented power from getting to the pump.

It is not uncommon for the breaker to trip if the well casing is hit by lightning or a wire inside the casing gets exposed and shorts out on the metal casing. If the power is off, reset the break to see if the power comes back on, and wait to see if it stays on. If the breaker trips a second time, leave the power off and call a well pump repair service so they can inspect the pump for you.

Check Your Filter System

Most homes that use well water also have a filtration system in them. It is essential that you check your filtration system if you are not getting water from your faucet. The filtration system may need to be flushed, and often the well pump repair service will be able to check that system if there is something wrong with it.

If you know how to manually flush the system to clear it, you can try before calling for a pump service call. If the system does not clear, the well pump tech may need to take the filter apart and check it for blockages in the line.

Replacing the Pump

If the well pump has failed, replacing it can be a little challenging, especially if the pump is a submersible pump that is at the bottom of the well. If the pump needs testing to confirm it needs replacing, the pump will need to be pulled out of the well. If the well is deep, it can be difficult to get it out.

Most well companies that offer service have special equipment to make the job easier, so it is best to let them extract the pump for you. If the pump is bad, the company can replace the pump with a new one. The well company will often be able to supply a pump for you if you need a new one and recommend a larger pump or a different style pump that is better suited for your needs.

Hidden Plumbing Problems: What To Look For

When I decided to replace the plumbing fixtures in my house with new ones, the whole process revealed some heavily damaged pipes. I had missed all of the more subtle signs of issues, and only realized it when I had to work on the pipes to get the new fixtures installed. I created this site to help others understand what to watch for and what types of things to look at before they start working. Spotting problems ahead of time will make it easier to get the project done in one sitting. I hope that the information here helps others avoid the emergency situation and unexpected expenses that I found myself facing.
