Five Questions to Answer About Gas Line Installation

Installing a new gas line is a must if you are updating your gas appliance, like a furnace, stove, or outdoor grill. There are some questions you need to answer before you proceed, though.

1. Do You Have Existing Gas On Your Property?

It's simplest to install gas when you already have a gas main running onto the property and you only need to install a lateral line to a new area. Otherwise, you will need to first install a gas main that hooks into the utility delivery pipes. This will likely require permits from the municipality and a call to the gas utility. In many cases, a new main onto your property may first require a visit from the gas utility so they can install a main. Then you can bring in your own contractor to route the gas line where desired.

2. Where Do You Need the Gas Line?

Will your gas line be running to a new appliance in the home, or will you be installing it outside to power something like a grill? Your contractor will need to map out the existing lines on your property so they can tap into the closest gas line to the location of the gas appliance you are installing.

3. Is the Area Vented Properly for Gas?

Venting is important, particularly indoors, when putting in new lines and gas appliances. Your contractor must inspect the current vent system in the room where the gas is going, and they may need to upgrade it to ensure gases like carbon monoxide don't pose an issue. For example, switching from an electric to a gas furnace may require a completely new vent system in your furnace closet.

4. What Are the Meter Requirements?

If your home wasn't previously on gas, you will also need to install a meter. Most utilities have specific meter requirements, some may even require that one of their own technicians installs new meters. Generally, you will probably need to install the meter in an accessible area on a wall on the forward-facing or side of the home or any area that isn't fenced off and can be accessed easily by foot.

5. Will a Fittings Test Be Performed?

Make sure the contractor you choose performs a full fittings check after gas line installation. This is done by running gas through the lines and then using an oxygen meter to check for any gas leaks between joints and valves along the line.
